Table Saw Buyer’s Guide

A table saw is a tool you’ll need to rely on if you are serious about woodworking. One of the things you need to understand about a table saw is that you move the workpiece towards the blades, unlike the other way round as in the case of a standard saw. The benefit of this kind of operation is that it results in extra precise cuts. Let’s take a look at some of the most important things to remember when purchasing a table saw.

Types of table saws

Table saws are usually classified based on their portability.

Jobsite table saws – these are mountable models that come with a stand and wheels. Together with their folding action, they allow for excellent portability. The stand is usually the selling point of these saws because they have unique and impressive designs.

Benchtop table saws – as their name suggests, these saws depend on a workbench or table for support. They do not arrive with a stand. They are still compact and portable because their small weight allows them to be picked up and moved from one table to another with ease. Speaking of stationary saws, they include contractor saws, hybrid saws and cabinet table saws.

Contractor table saws – are often confused with Jobsite saws, but they are much larger and more powerful. A straightforward design and affordable prices characterise them. These saws are virtually the only options for the home shop, small cabinetry projects, trim work, carpentry and basic furniture making.

Cabinet models – are the superpowers of all table saws. They are different from the other saw types in every component. They are highly accurate, bulky, heavy and extremely durable. No wonder they have sneaked their way into most factory shops, specialised schools and workshops of almost every professional contractor.

Hybrid saws – fill the gap between the inexpensive contractor saws and professional high-end cabinet saws. They usually feature some of the most valuable features of cabinet saws at a price that’s still within the range of a hobbyist. They come with open leg stands, however, you’ll find some models with full enclosures. They are also similar to contractor saws in some aspects, but those similarities are usually skin-deep. Generally speaking, you’ll either purchase a portable model or a stationary table saw. The type of saw you choose depends on the kind of woodworking that you do, the amount of time you spend on your project and the amount of space in your workshop. If you usually make small cabinetry and craft projects, which means you spend only a few hours a week in your shop, a cabinet saw is all you need. A hybrid table saw can be ideal for a small professional shop and can be relied on for working a few hours at a time.

ANOTHER GREAT PICK

Lumberjack TS254SE 10
We think this table saw is a worthy pick in this regard. It has all the basics at a very reasonable price. First, it’s the 1500W motor that sends the blade spinning at 4,500 rpm to cut through the material. Then there’s the extendable table that increases its capacity to hold up to 8 x 4 sheets of material.

Features such as mitre gauge and bevel angle adjustment take cutting flexibility to the next level. Additionally, this table has a sturdy stand with rubber feet at the base for maximum stability. It merely has the right features to do the job. Ask for anything more, and you’ll be forced to spend more as well.

Blades

Table saw blades vary in terms of arbor size, kerf size, diameter, number of teeth, speed, application and construction material. Commercial table saws usually come with either 10-in or 12-in blades whilst some other models have blades as large as 1ft and as small as 5 inches.

The number of teeth can range from 24 to 80. Most table saws these days can cut through a variety of materials, including wood, metal and plastic, so they usually have blades made of carbide, carbon and diamond-tipped teeth. Another concern with blades is the tilt direction, whether right or left. Either direction has its advantages and disadvantages.

Blade adjustments – Contemporary table saws allow blade adjustments in different ways. The blade can usually be adjusted by changing its axis or even vertically. By adjusting the blade’s axis, you can make cuts at certain angles such as bevel cuts, which are great for creating joints. Vertical adjustments, on the other hand, are created by exposing much of the blade, and that changes the cutting depth. This is very useful when dealing with thick pieces of wood and for non-cross cuts.

Blade sizing – Table saw blades are sized according to their outside diameter and the diameter of the mounting hole. Standard widths measure 8, 10, or 12 inches in diameter but there are still larger and smaller blades. Larger blades are usually designed for specific commercial purposes. The easiest way to know the size of the blade for your table saw is by consulting the product manual. Common sense also plays a big part here. There’s a limited amount of space inside the arbor, meaning you can’t fit any blade. The space is also finite due to the presence of a blade guard.

Blade types – The basic examples of blades include rip and crosscut blades. The former has a large number of teeth as well as larger gullets, thus providing room to extract the shavings and dust. These blades especially cut along the grain of the workpiece on the table. Although they make fast cuts, the resulting cuts are usually rough. A crosscut blade, on the other hand, delivers fine cuts. The resulting cut is usually smooth. However, the feed rate is much slower because there are more teeth to cut through the wood and the teeth have less space for chip removal. There are also combination blades that guarantee both speed and smooth finish. You’ll also come across special blades designed to cut through certain materials such as hardwood, plywood, plastic, brick or even plastic.

Blade teeth – Generally, the more teeth a blade has, the smoother the cut it makes. But, more teeth mean that the cutting is done slowly yet fewer teeth make for fast cutting but rougher finish.

Blade material – Blades designed to cut hardwood and plywood are usually crafted out of metal. Those meant to cut through harder materials are fabricated from even harder materials. Blades that cut through the wood are made out of steel or carbon steel for extra durability. Masonry blades, which are usually diamond-tipped, are designed to cut through steel and aluminium. These blades feature teeth that are treated with tungsten carbide or hardened metal. Last but not least, there are blades made to cut through acrylic and PVC materials, and their teeth are fabricated out of low-temperature tungsten carbide.

Blade RPM (Revolutions per Minute) – One aspect you must look into is the speed of the blade, usually expressed in RPM. Keep in mind that the speed of the table saw must never exceed the speed of the blade. Otherwise, the mismatch can cause the blade to break apart as a result of centrifugal force.

BEST DIY PICK

Evolution Fury 5-S Multi-Purpose Table Saw
The Evolution Fury 5-S Multi-Purpose Table Saw, 255 mm (230 V) is the ultimate tool for the experienced DIYers. This utilises Evolution’s multi-purpose cutting technology to power its carbide 255mm blade through a variety of materials including wood, plastic, mild steel, and non-ferrous metals. Furthermore, it does the job with no heat build-up and leaves a neat finish with no burr. Its powerful 1500W high-torque motor provides plenty of cutting power, whilst the blade can be adjusted to make angle cuts from 0 to 60 degrees.

This model excels in the accessories department as it includes things such as adjustable rip fence, 2 x fence rails, anti-bounce device, 2 x table extensions, 2 x blade changing tools, mitre gauge, among others. It really takes an experienced person to make the most of this table saw. The final positive is that the tool comes with a 3-year warranty, and it’s a serious bargain.

Fence and Mitre gauge

The fence is a significant part of any table saw, and it’s actually what makes it different from standard saws. The T-square fence is the most common type found on table saws, and it features a robust design and good precision. Any kind of rip cut would be impossible without this fence. If you intend to make angled cuts or cross cuts, you will have to depend on your saw’s mitre gauge.

Motor

Table saws also vary depending on the type of motor they integrate. Smaller, compact table saws come with direct-drive motors that run on 120V circuits. These motors are capable of producing up to 2hp, enough for cutting thinner sheets of material. Most stationary table saws operate on 240V circuits and have motors that produce from 3 to 5hp. They also depend on a belt drive to transfer the power from the motor to the blade.

Safety features

As you would expect, safety features on a table saw are a must-have. Of course, you need to take extra caution when your hands are only inches away from a blade that rotates at thousands of RPMs. Also, keep in mind kickback that can happen when the material binds between the back of the blade and the table or fence. Features such as anti-kickback pawls, splitters and riving knives can help minimise the risk of kickback. Some other table saws feature advanced safety systems to help keep your fingers intact.

Table saw accessories

On/off switches, table extensions, onboard storage, dust collection systems and wheels that allow you to control the height and tilt of the blade can be found on almost every table saw made by reputable brands. These accessories can expand the functionality of the saw, thus making it more convenient to use.

You can convert your table saw into an ultimate woodworking machine by adding a series of accessories and upgrades such as better blade, dado blade sets, crosscut sled, molding heads, a router table and various jigs. An extension table can also increase the rip capacity of the table saw.

And there you have it! Having looked at the features to consider in the best table saw, let’s jump into the table saw reviews and look at what our top models have to offer. Remember to pay attention to our table saw recommendations at least you know which table saw is right for what project.

BEST PICK

Buy on Amazon.co.uk

DEWALT DW745 610MM Table Saw (240V)

The DeWalt DW745 is a heavy-duty lightweight table saw made by a famous manufacturer of power tools and electric tools that are widely employed in the construction industry. To begin with, it’s worth mentioning that the DW745 is built for table mounting, thus you should choose an installation location prior to securing this model. Fortunately, the tool is fitted with adjustable rear feet that help level the saw even on uneven ground. Now we have covered let’s move on to the features.

Moving on to the performance capabilities, the model comes with a powerful 1850 watt motor that is capable of spinning the blade at speeds of 3800rpm with no load, i.e. before you start applying pressure and cutting through materials.

The power tool arrives with a 250mm blade with 24 teeth and furthermore, it accepts blades of up to 250mm. The blade can be adjusted from 0-45 degrees for bevel cuts where you can achieve maximum cut depths of 57mm and 77mm with a straight 90 degrees. The blade features 24T carbide material that enhances the quality of the cut and extends the life of the blade.

There’s a fence system that offers 24 inches of rip capacity for cutting large wood workpieces to size. In addition, the tool is equipped with rack and pinion telescoping fence rails that make the fence adjustments fast, smooth and precise. The table itself is coated to minimise friction and enhance smooth cutting.

Fitted with onboard storage, the tool offers easy access to the Site-Pro guarding components plus a push stick when not being used. A metal roll cage base protects the crucial tool components and guarantees better durability than a plastic base would do.

Needless to say, a tool like this ought to have a decent safety system and, of course, it does. It comes with a blade guard to protect you from accidental injuries. As expected there’s a dust port that allows hook up of a 2 – ½-inch vacuum to get rid of chips keeping the working area as clean as possible. In addition, the table has an overload protection system, which means you can use it to cut through hardwoods as well as chipboard.

Summing up, the table saw weighs 21kg (48lbs), so it can easily be moved from one job site to another. DeWalt backs this power tool with a 3-year warranty for extra peace of mind.

Our recommendation

The DeWalt (DW745) Compact Job SiteTable Saw is a top product that professionals can rely on for their day-to-day material cutting. With a powerful motor, blade adjustments and incredible cutting depths, you can never ask for something better to handle large pieces of materials.

One quality of the best table saw is the durability of the components and this model certainly has this covered because it has been manufactured to the highest of standards. The metal roll cage base plus the 24T carbide blade fitted on this tool commands such an extended lifespan of this tool, meaning you’ll make the most out of your investment which is important for a table saw within the higher price range.

Perhaps the only downside is the noise emitted by this tool – probably normal though for a saw of its power. Apart from that, every other piece is of great quality.

We might say that this is one of the most compact table saws that can be employed for sawing incredibly large wooden planks with ease.

Because this model is classed as a table saw it needs to be placed on a worktable or something similar. Although we have not reviewed it, there is also a DeWalt heavy-duty rolling work station you can purchase separately.

Overall, this is by far the best table saw we have reviewed to date, but this quality and performance come at a cost. However, the cost is well worth the investment for anyone in the trade or looking for a very accurate machine and a real workhorse.

4. Evolution FURY5-S Multi-Purpose Table Saw

BEST DIY PICK

Buy on Amazon.co.uk

Evolution Power Tools Fury 5-S Table Saw, Multi-Material Multi-Purpose & Portable, Cuts Wood, Metal, Plastic & More, Bench Saw, 3 Year Warranty Included & TCT Blade 255 mm (230 V, 1500W)

Every model on our list comes with its own goodies but this model is our favourite and comes at an amazing price when compared to similar models from the likes of DeWalt and Makita. The Evolution FURY5-S Multi-Purpose Table Saw provides unparalleled cutting versatility, especially when it comes to what you can actually cut with just one blade type. The saw comes with a multi-purpose blade that cuts a wide range of materials including wood, steel, aluminium, cable, plastic. It will cut pretty much any material thanks to the patented RAGE technology and blade design.

What is really smart about this is that it eliminates the need to change the blade as is the case with most other table saws we have reviewed and compared. Even more interesting, especially when cutting steel, the blade leaves an instantly smooth finish because it has the ability to create no heat, but as well it virtually creates no sparks when cutting through steel.

The fitted blade can be adjusted up to an angle of 45 degrees for bevel cuts when most will find very handy and tilting the blade to a required angle involves rotating the same wheel that also raises and lowers the height of the blade. We really like this because it’s more convenient than other table saws with two separate adjustment wheels. With the height adjusted, you can achieve an impressive cutting depth of up to 85mm.

Additionally, the table saw features a quick clamp and parallel rip fence with a rail guide that enhances assisted and accurate rip cutting. There’s also an anti-bounce accessory that reduces the chances of material movement when making cuts.

In closing, the table saw comes with a push stick for safe operation when making small cuts. In addition, there’s a dust extraction port that connects to a vacuum hose to help reduce sawdust build-up around the work surface. This is a must for any good table saw which ensures a cleaner and safer working environment.

Pros

  • Multi-purpose cutting which means it can cut through mild steel, non-ferrous metals, plastic and wood with just one blade.
  • Delivers clean cuts every time.
  • Adjustable blade angle and height settings.
  • Assisted accuracy offered by clamp and parallel fence.
  • Features a dust extraction port to reduce dust and keep the working area clear.
  • Excellent value for money.
  • 3 years warranty for full peace of mind.

Specifications

  • Powerful 1500W motor
  • Maximum cutting depth of 85mm
  • Blade length – 255mm
  • At only 21kg it’s light enough to move around from place to place.
  • Voltage – 230V

Our recommendation

The Evolution Fury5 S Table Top Saw is a powerful tool with plenty of nice features and comes at a very affordable price making it within reach of most people whether your home user or a keen DIY enthusiast.

The selling point of this machine is the versatile blade that cuts through a range of various materials including steel, wood and plastic, this is a big advantage to the DIY handymen of us because it means we don’t have to constantly change the blade during a project.

Other features we like are the adjustable settings that additionally make it able to make bevel cuts. Overall, it has some great features and is a good all-purpose saw. After much consideration we decided that this table saw was certainly worthy of being our ‘Best Pick’ for DIY enthusiasts thanks to its versatility, quality build, features and not forgetting the 3-year warranty you get. All this means it is a great fit for most people.

The only exception to this would be for someone who is looking for a more specialist table saw or looking for a model for more trade and professional use, for this we would recommend something a little substantial that can handle the intensive work environment, such as the DeWalt Table Saw which is our best pick.

Its riving knife can be lowered to make concealed cuts and the best part is that you don’t need any tools in this regard. In addition, this tool benefits from an ergonomic wheel and knob, allowing for convenient bevel and depth adjustment. There’s also a dust extraction port that draws dust directly into the tool’s onboard dust bag.

A rip fence is another integral part of this table saw, providing a decent grip on either side of the table, with a clamp holding workpieces firmly in place. The supplied blade has 24 teeth and its quality is just enough for professional use. There’s plenty of storage under the table where you can keep handy accessories within reach. The base is extremely sturdy and uniquely designed for easy storage and transportation.

As usual, Bosch offers a 3-year warranty on this product but you must register it with them online. The only issue is that the initial cost for securing this model is quite high.

6. VonHaus 1800W 10” Table Saw

Buy on Amazon.co.uk

VonHaus Table Saw - Circular Saw Function 1800W 10” (250mm) with 5500rpm Underframe – High Spec with Attachable Table Sides – Make Longitudinal & Angle Cuts with Carbide-Tipped Saw Blade Fixable

The VonHaus 1800W 10” (250mm) Table Saw is a cutting tool for the budget end of the market. The table is decent enough for the price, but the quality of some features has taken a back seat. It comes flat packed and you’ll find it easy to assemble thanks to straightforward instructions and its well-engineered parts that fit together properly. The stand that comes with this machine is sturdy, however, it has an awkward design that’s not intended to be in any way portable.

The table dimensions are about 67cm x 48cm and that’s reasonable for the majority of DIY cutting tasks. Its 1800W powerful motor will slice through even the toughest woods with ease and it manifests its power right from the get-go because it has no soft-start function. So the tool explodes into full-speed action the moment it’s switched on. Many budget models lack a soft-start function anyway.

With dust being a problem in any wood sawing site, this VonHaus includes dust extraction ports located on the top blade guard and on the rear of the machine. These ports are effective at removing sawdust but they require a vacuum hose splitter to connect both to the vacuum system simultaneously.

On the negative side, the rip fence on this model is not practically inspiring. Apart from not extending the full length of the table, it does not lock properly on its back end, leaving it vulnerable to movement if too much pressure is applied when cross-cutting. The mitre-guide is also flimsy and wobbles more than desired.

Pros

  • Equipped with a carbide-tipped blade that makes precise longitudinal and angled cuts.
  • Adjustable height and angle to perform mitre cuts.
  • Includes a clamp rip fence for safer cutting.
  • Has dust extraction ports to ensure a sawdust-free surrounding.
  • The base frame is extra sturdy for enhanced stability.

Specifications

  • Voltage: 220 – 240V
  • Power: 1800W
  • No-load speed: 5500rpm
  • Blade size: 250mm x 24T
  • Cutting range: 0 – 45 degrees
  • Maximum cutting height: 0’’ max 80mm / 45’’ max 65mm
  • Dust port: 35mm
  • Table dimensions: 642 x 478 x 28mm

Our recommendation

The VonHaus 1800W Table Saw is a powerful, reliable and versatile tool that’s perfect for DIY enthusiasts. With its 250mm cutting blade, this will allow you to make precise cuts in solid wood and MDF. Angled cuts are also possible thanks to the height and angle adjustment of the table. Its dust collection ports are functional but a connection to a vacuum cleaner is a must. The base is very sturdy and even large format materials will be securely held in place. It has its own flaws, again why rule it out for professional applications, but it’s a good starting point for beginners.

Final Conclusion

There is no need to buy a cheap table saw especially if you want one that can serve you for years. Save up some good money and make a worthwhile investment on heavy-duty models.

If you require a table saw for occasional use then you can find worthwhile models in the marketplace. Even if the model is cheap, make sure that the quality is good enough to get your work done. Our top recommendation is the DeWalt (DW745) Compact Job SiteTable Saw.
