Do you know where your garden hose is? If you look out of your window, can you see it snaking across your garden, all tangled, kinked up and muddy? If it’s all rolled up and put away tidily, good for you; but did you have to fight with it to get all the water out and then roll it up? Your gardening life would be much easier if you had a hose reel. And not just any hose reel, but a hose reel cart that you can move around from the front garden to your back garden to cover all your garden with ease.
A hose reel is basically a spindle around which you wind the hose by turning a handle, although some of them automatically wind the hose for you. You connect the hose reel to an outside tap to get the water to flow through the hose. A hose reel cart goes one step further and adds wheels so you can move the hose from tap to tap outside to reach all parts of your front, side, and back gardens, plus they can often hold much longer hoses, which are perfect for larger gardens.
Our review of the Best Hose Reel Carts brings to you the top carts, along with a Buyer’s Guide that discusses what features to look for as you make your purchasing decision. Each cart review covers the pros and cons of the model as well as why we are recommending them. We select our Best Pick and the Runner-up and give them an extra highlight.
Our Best Pick from the hose reel cart review is the Hozelock Wheeled Fast Cart with 40m hose. This is the only cart in this article that comes in an enclosed container that protects the hose from all the effects of bad weather and environmental degradation from the UV sunlight. Our Runner-up Pick is the Claber Metal Gemini Hose Cart. It’s made from metal so it’s strong and rust-resistant, and it comes without a hose so you can use your favourite one and choose your desired length.
Read our hose reel cart reviews to pick up a garden tool that will save you the irritation and difficulty of having to wrestle with your hose as you put it away after watering your garden and so that you can have an extra-long hose if needed too.

Top 6 Hose Reel Cart Reviews
1. Hozelock Wheeled Fast Cart With 40 Metre Hose
BEST PICK
Buy on Amazon.co.uk
The Hozelock Wheeled Fast Cart with its 40m hose is a hose reel cart with many features that are there for your convenience. This makes it easy for you to water your garden with minimal effort whenever you need to. The large wheels and extendable towing handle let you move the hose reel cart anywhere close to an outside tap to reach all parts of your garden.
First of all, the Hozelock Wheeled Fast Cart comes fully assembled. No more looking around the garden shed for your toolbox and then finding that you don’t have the right spanner or screwdriver. Secondly, this hose reel cart comes with a 40-metre good quality hose already wound in an organised, layered way around the spindle. You won’t have to wind it on and worry if it’s becoming squished or bent as you do so.
Thirdly, this model includes a 2-metre separate feeder hose. This is the hose that goes between your outside tap and the cart and where the water flows through to the larger hose. Many of the models in our hose reel cart reviews don’t come with this essential connection hose and you will need to cut a piece of your main hose to use as the feeder hose. All the connectors, including the tap connector, are included.
The fourth feature in our long list of convenient elements of the Hozelock Wheeled Fast Cart is one that makes it stand out amongst all the other products in this review. The fast cart is completely enclosed in a container like a rounded box. This keeps the hose and all the other parts of the cart away from the UV rays of the sun and from the rain, snow and whatever other weather happen in the garden-watering months. This extends the life of the hose reel, especially the lifetime of the hose.
The last feature we want to mention is that the container has a safety lock to seal it up. This stops anyone from opening it and using the hose, especially unsupervised children on a hot summer’s day.
Pros
- Comes assembled so it’s ready for use when you unpack it.
- Fully enclosed design for the hose so it’s protected from all weathers and all environmental hazards.
- 40m of regular hose plus 2m of feeder hose lets you attach the cart directly to your outside tap.
- The hose is automatically layered when it’s wound back into place so it won’t bend or kink.
- Clip on the handle to hold the nozzle for storage.
- Adjustable height handle for your comfort when moving the cart around.
- Large winding handle for effortless, stress-free winding.
- Large wheels and extendable, durable towing handle let you effortlessly move the cart over all terrains.
- Made of high-quality plastic so it’s lightweight (13.6kg) and more importantly rust-resistant.
- Included water stop lets you roll or unroll the hose to the required length.
- Built-in safety lock so children can’t play with this while you’re not there.
- Five-year warranty when you register online; two years otherwise so it’s well worth registering online.
Cons
- Comes with everything need to use the hose (including the tap connector) but all accessories are plastic so it may be worth investing in metal fittings eventually because plastic fittings do break much easier.
Our recommendation
The Hozelock Wheeled Fast Cart with its 40m hose is a hose reel with wheels that has features that make it easy to just take out of the box and use immediately. It’s the only hose reel cart in this article in which the hose is completely enclosed in a box to protect it from the elements and more importantly, sunny UV rays. Don’t worry about leaving this piece of garden equipment outdoors in the spring, summer or autumn.
Online reviewers are delighted that the Hozelock Wheeled Fast Cart comes fully assembled and with a hose so you can just take it out of the box, hook it up to a water source, and start using it. However, they complain that, while all the connectors and other small parts are included, they are made of plastic and break after a while, this is a problem with most plastic connectors so we advise upgrading to metal fitting when they need replacing.
We’re impressed with all the features of the Hozelock Wheeled Fast Cart with a 40m hose and with the length of the hose provided that will reach the edges of a fair-sized garden. We’ve made it the Best Pick of our hose reel cart reviews.
2. Claber Metal Gemini Hose Cart
RUNNER UP
Buy on Amazon.co.uk
The Claber Metal Gemini Hose Cart has one large advantage over all but one of its competitors that are reviewed in this article. This model is made completely of epoxy resin-coated metal. This makes it a durable and long-lasting piece of garden equipment. In addition, it’s both rust and weather-resistant, so you don’t need to worry about leaving it out in the rain or when it’s drizzling.
If you’re worried about having metal-to-metal connections in this hose reel cart, don’t be. This cart uses the proprietary silent block system that stops those connections from wearing down, another feature that increases the workable life of the cart.
The Gemini Hose Cart comes in kit form so you do have to assemble it, however, you won’t need any tools because the parts simply click into place. No more last-minute dashes to the B&Q for yet another tool you won’t use very often. Once you’ve assembled this hose-cart-with-wheels, you do have to install your own hose because unfortunately this is not included with your purchase. You can use up to a 30m length of 13mm (1/2) garden hose, which is long enough for most medium-sized gardens. If you have a source of water somewhere else within your garden then you can use this in larger gardens.
The oversized wheels of the Gemini Hose Cart give stability on uneven ground and make handling the cart smooth and easy.
Pros
- Kit-form that you assemble without the need for tools.
- Silent-Block stops the metal-to-metal connections from wearing down for extra durability.
- Large wheels give stability on uneven ground and make handling the hose cart easier.
- Weighs 7.5kg.
- Made completely from epoxy resin-coated metal so it’s rust and weather resistant.
- Holds up to 400ft (120m) of 13mm inch hose (that is not supplied) so it’s long enough for medium to large-sized gardens.
- Comes with fittings to connect to the faucet.
Cons
- Assembly instructions are difficult to follow but there’s a video to follow on the Claber website.
- The Garden hose is not supplied so bear in mind you will need to cut a section of the feeder hose off your main hose.
Our recommendation
The Claber Metal Gemini Hose Cart is made of just what it says – it’s all metal. This makes it almost unique among the other carts in our review. While the metal structure and parts make it a little heavier than the other models we have looked at, the epoxy resin-coated metal adds to the cart’s durability and protects it from rust and the weather. The Gemini Hose cart comes in kit form so you have to assemble it yourself and you also have to supply the hose.
Reviewers online, in general, didn’t seem to mind having to assemble this cart too much although some complained that the assembly instructions were difficult to follow. Others, however, had found a useful assembly video on Claber’s website. Another issue that reviewers mentioned was that this model doesn’t come with a garden hose or a feeder hose to attach the reel cart to a tap. You have to provide these yourself.
Overall, we’re impressed with the Claber Metal Gemini Hose Cart for its metal construction and have made it the Runner-up Pick in our review of the Best Hose Reel Carts.
3. Hozelock 60m Assembled Hose Cart with 50m Hose
Buy on Amazon.co.uk
The Hozelock 60m Assembled Hose Cart with 50m Hose is similar to our Best Pick, the Hozelock Wheeled Fast Cart with 40m hose. It has some of the same features but the differences may be what you’re looking for.
One welcome similarity is that the Hozelock 60m Assembled Hose Cart comes fully assembled – just take it out of the box, you don’t have to put anything together. Although the name of the cart includes “60m”, it actually comes with a 50m 13mm hose. The 60m is the longest hose that you can install on it but you can also purchase it with a 20-metre or 30-metre hose too if 50-metres is too long.
Another similarity is that the towing handle is height adjustable to suit however tall you are. Pulling the cart will be easy and its oversized patterned wheels and steel axles will give a smooth ride. The handle also retracts fully for easy storage of the cart in a smaller space.
This model is made of the same superior plastic as the Best Pick model and gives rust and weatherproof surfaces. The wide base creates a low centre of gravity to add to the stability of the cart.
And here are the differences, along with the longer hose. The Hozelock 60m Assembled Hose Cart with 50m Hose is not enclosed in a container; there’s no safety lock either with this 60m model. All parts of the cart, including the hose, are exposed to the outside elements.
Pros
- Ready assembled so you can use it as soon as you unpack it.
- One-piece, extra-long winding handle for quick and easy rewinding.
- Weighs 7.5kg.
- 50m of 13mm (1/2) multi-purpose hose is included for your immediate use.
- Oversized soft patterned wheels and steel axles make it easy to move this cart anywhere.
- A wide base and a low centre of gravity give added stability to the cart.
- The towing handle is adjustable to whatever height suits you for moving the hose cart.
- The towing handle also fully retracts for easy storage in a smaller space.
- Made of superior plastic for rust and weather resistance.
- Five-year warranty when you register online; two years otherwise.
Cons
- No separate feeder hose is included to attach to the tap, so you need to cut a section off the main hose or buy a feeder hose.
- Hose could be better quality as it does have a tendency to kink.
Our recommendation
The Hozelock 60m Assembled Hose Cart with 50m Hose carries the Hozelock name and that comes with a history of high-quality products. This hose reel cart comes fully assembled which appeals to many people and, with the included hose, makes it almost ready for use. Ergonomically, the extra-long winding mechanism won’t strain your arm as you rewind the hose, which is rewound in a layered fashion. Being able to adjust the height of the towing handle for transporting the cart means you don’t have to stoop over as you move it around your garden.
Online reviewers have some problems with the Hozelock 60m Assembled Hose Cart. The most reported one is that their carts didn’t include a feeder hose, however, many other don’t either. They had to either cut up a hose they already had or cut a length off the 50m hose that was included with this cart.
The Hozelock 60m Assembled Hose Cart with 50m Hose is a consideration if you already have Hozelock garden equipment and are impressed with their quality. The 50m hose included with this reel cart will serve those with larger gardens, but take care when winding in to avoid causing kinks.
4. Gardena AquaRoll M Set: Hose trolley with 20m of Classic Hose
Buy on Amazon.co.uk
The Gardena AquaRoll M Set: Hose trolley with 20m of Classic Hose has a couple of features that the other hose reel carts in our article don’t appear to have. These will extend the seasons you can leave the reel cart outside in your garden.
This is a cart that you need to assemble. It comes in kit form and you need to put it all together. This may be a plus or minus depending on your DIY ability and enthusiasm. This model comes with just 20m of regular garden hose which will stretch to the back of a small or small-medium-sized garden. If you want to replace this with a longer hose, you can use up to a 60m 13mm (1/2) length. Also included is a spray nozzle.
Interestingly, the Gardena AquaRoll M Set comes with three sizes of hose adapters for taps. No other product in this review claims to do that. With 13mm, 20mm and 26mm adapters for threaded taps, you know that you can hook a hose to any of your outdoor sources of water.
Stability and storage are two concerns of this model. The fold-out supporting stand at the front of the cart gives stability when you’re extending and rewinding the hose. This stand folds up, the crank folds in and the handle pushes down so the cart takes up a small space, allowing you to easily store it away in a corner of your shed or garage.
The two (maybe unique) features for the extra working life of the hose reel cart are the anti-drip device and the frost resistance. The anti-drip device stops any irritating and damaging drip of water after you’ve used the hose. The hose itself is frost resistant so you don’t have to worry too much about getting the hose reel cart in before the first frost of late autumn but it’s not frost-proof so it still needs draining and putting away for winter.
Pros
- The fold-out supporting stand gives stability when you’re pulling out and rewinding the hose.
- The clip on the height-adjustable handle keeps the connection hose and the nozzle out of the way.
- Anti-drip device to stop the annoying drips of water after the hose is used.
- Frost resistant so you can leave the hose out in the garden until the end of autumn.
- 20m hose is included with the cart along with a spray nozzle.
- The hose cart can hold up to 60m of 13mm garden hose.
- Comes with hose adapters for ½ inch, ¾ inch, and 1 inch thread taps.
- Cart rotates 180° so you can crank ergonomically from either side for your convenience.
- The supporting foot folds up, the crank folds in and the handle pushes down for quick and easy storage in limited space.
- A five-year warranty gives you confidence in the product.
Cons
- Need to assemble this cart and the instructions aren’t easy to follow.
Our recommendation
If you have a small garden or plenty of taps in a medium-sized garden, then you won’t mind the 20m hose that comes with the Gardena AquaRoll M Set: Hose trolley with 20m of Classic Hose. You could also consider this if you already have a working garden hose that you’re prepared to use. If you tend to leave your garden equipment outside and forget about it, the frost resistance of this model is a plus.
Reviewers online complained that assembling the Gardena AquaRoll M Set was a pain. The instructions aren’t easy to follow and they had to make some guesses about what went where.
If you want a basic hose reel cart for a smallish garden that you can store in a small space and is super high quality, take a look at this one.
5. Tacklife Garden Hose Reel Cart
Buy on Amazon.co.uk
No products found. The Tacklife Garden Hose Reel Cart is the most basic hose-reel-with-wheels in our review. Its price reflects this as it’s by far the cheapest model we look at.
The Tacklife cart comes in kit form and needs you to assemble it. The good news is that you don’t need any tools so putting it together should go quite quickly.
The triangular structure of this model also sets it apart from the other hose reel carts. This shape is the most stable structure you can have and that’s shown when you’re extending the garden hose. The frame is built of a combination of high-quality plastic and metal so it is, in part, rust and weather resistant. This is the main reason for the light weight of the cart, which comes in at 3.1kg.
You do have to supply your own hose with this model. It can deal with up to 45m of 13mm garden hose, making it suitable for medium-sized gardens. You can buy the add-on of the hose guide that ensures that the hose rewinds in an organised manner on the spindle.
No matter your height, moving the Tacklife Garden Hose Reel Cart will be comfortable due to the ergonomic extendable handle. With a range of 59cm to 80cm, your arm won’t feel any strain in towing it along.
Pros
- Optional hose guider ensures that the hose rewinds in an orderly fashion on the spindle.
- Hose capacity is up to 45m of standard 13mm garden hose, enough to reach the edges of a medium or larger sized garden.
- The extendable ergonomic handle is comfortable and reaches from 59cm to 80cm to make towing easy on your body.
- A triangular structure gives extra stability to the cart when you’re pulling on the garden hose.
- The high-quality plastic and the metal frame are durable and rust-resistant, in part.
- Assembly is tool-less so you don’t need any spanners and wrenches, which you may not have.
- Weighs 3.1kg.
- Much cheaper than the other models we’ve reviewed.
Cons
- Comes without a hose.
- Very lightweight (3.1kg) so moves when you’re pulling or rewinding the hose.
Our recommendation
The Tacklife Garden Hose Reel Cart is basic and the inexpensive price reflects that. You’ll have to help the hose rewind properly on the spindle unless you buy, as an extra, the hose guider, but with a short hose that shouldn’t take too much time or effort.
Online reviewers have remarked that the light weight of this model means that it moves when you’re extending or rewinding the hose; you may need someone to hold it in place.
If you’re counting on using a short hose and are tired of seeing it laying around the garden, the Tacklife Garden Hose Reel Cart could be for you.

6. Hozelock 90m Assembled Metal Hose Cart
Buy on Amazon.co.uk
The Hozelock 90m Assembled Metal Hose Cart is the third cart from this manufacturer in our review. This shows the company’s dominance in the industry and its fan base.
Like all Hozelock reel carts, the Hozelock 90m model comes fully assembled. If you dislike putting things together, a cart from this brand is certainly for you. Unlike the other Hozelock models we’ve discussed, this one is made of high-quality steel that’s been zinc plated. No more worrying about damage from rust or weather conditions.
The telescoping towing handle has a soft-grip cover so your hand won’t be rubbed or acquire hard spots from towing this cart. In addition, the extra tall handle telescopes down fully so you can store the cart in a smaller space, in the corner of your garage or shed.
The hose is not included with this Hozelock 90m model. However, the manufacturer reports that you can use up to 90m of 15.5mm hose, 75m of 15mm hose, or 50m of 19mm hose without strain on the spindle or winding mechanism. You rewind the hose manually by using the single handle.
Stability is interestingly addressed here. The fold down kickstand adds balance along with the wide stance of the cart for a sturdy, stable base. Also, when you stand the cart upright to unwind the hose, the wheels lift slightly off the ground. This is so the cart won’t move and follow you down the garden as you pull on the garden hose.
Pros
- Comes assembled and ready for you to immediately water your garden.
- Made from high-quality steel, zinc plated for durability and rust resistance.
- The extra tall telescopic towing handle has a soft-grip cover for your comfort when you pull it along.
- The towing handle is fully retractable for ease of storage in small spaces in your shed or garage.
- Has a fold down kickstand that pairs with the wide stance for a sturdy and stable base.
- Stores up to 90m of 13mm hose, 75mm of 15mm hose or 50mm of 19mm hose.
- Oversized soft patterned wheels on a steel axle make moving the cart a snap.
- Standing the cart upright to unwind the hose lifts the wheels slightly off the ground so the cart won’t move and follow the hose down the garden.
- Five-year warranty when you register online; two years otherwise.
Cons
- The hose is not included
- Struggles with 50m and longer hoses because of their width and length.
- Liable to tip as you wind the crank to retract the hose if you are not careful.
Our recommendation
The Hozelock 90m Assembled Metal Hose Cart continues the series of hose reel carts from Hozelock. Its metal construction is certainly a positive if you’re somewhat hard on your garden tools and equipment. Being able to store 90m of 13mm garden hose is a consideration if you have a large garden and only one outside tap so the hose has to reach everywhere from that one point. Not having to put this hose reel cart together will appeal to people who just want to look after their gardens and not construct anything.
Criticisms from some online reviewers include the quality of this model’s construction – the quality is not quite as good as they expected. Some also state that the cart is liable to tip as you use the crank to retract the hose. These reports may relate to others that state that the gardeners have problems using hoses 50m long and longer. They’re just too heavy for this cart.
If you’re looking for a durable hose reel cart and like the Hozelock name, then we recommend that you look at the Hozelock 90m Assembled Metal Hose Cart. Indeed, compare all three Hozelock carts that we’ve reviewed here before you decide if one of them is for you.
Buyer’s Guide
There’s such a choice of hose reels available that you start to wonder why you haven’t bought one before. This Buyer’s Guide takes you through some of the features to look for in hose reels in general and then zooms in on the features of hose reel carts. After reading this you’ll know more about the kind of cart you need for your particular garden arrangement as well as the size of hose required.
Assembly
Are you handy with a spanner or a screwdriver? Some hose reels carts, in particular, come fully assembled; you just have to open the box. Some come in kit form. Of these, some fit together without tools and others need you to go and find your toolbox. Many of the reviews we found online complain about the difficulty of following the included instructions for many of the models we reviewed.
Material
It seems you have a choice of high-quality plastic, coated metal or a mixture of both. Both are rust and weather resistant, but plastic is lighter and more prone to breaking whereas metal is longer-lasting and more durable. There didn’t seem to be much price difference between the different materials.
Hose
There are several considerations about the hose in the hose reel setup. The decisions that you make here will affect the performance that you get and the level of irritation you experience in the setup.
With or without a hose?
The first decision is whether you want the hose reel to come with a hose. If you have one of your own already, you can look for a cart without one. If you’ve always used a watering can or your hose is old and broken, look for a reel cart that comes with the hose.
The length of the hose
Bear in mind that your hose reel has to be within the length of the feeder hose of your outside tap. The feeder hose is usually from 1 to 2 metres long. If you only have one tap, then the length of the (feeder hose + garden hose) has to reach close to the most extreme reaches of your garden. Additionally, if you only have a tap in your back garden, the hose has to reach the front garden from this point too. Do your calculations carefully.
The feeder hose
The feeder hose attaches the hose reel to the outside tap. Some models don’t come with one. You’ll have to cut up an old hose or cut a piece from the hose (if any) that came with your hose reel. This second option affects the length of hose you have to work with.
Stationary or mobile?
This is where the hose reel carts come into their own. If you need to move your hose reel around your garden or from the front to the side to the back, consider a hose reel cart. These basically hose reels on wheels. They have a towing handle, often extendable and ergonomically designed, and large wheels that make moving the cart easy and without strain. One of the models we review is enclosed in a box-like container to protect the hose from the rough elements of weather, including UV rays. This extends the useful life of the garden hose.
Warranty
This appears in many of Buyer’s Guides. Some of the warranties we found look quite extensive, in that they’re five years long, but only if you register online. Read the fine print about the warranty and watch out for any conditions that you have to satisfy to receive that long warranty period.
FAQs
How do you put a hose on a hose reel?
The feeder hose
- Attach the clamping nut that comes with the cart towards one end of the feeder hose.
- Push that end of the feeder hose firmly into the centre of the claws in the circular part at the side of the reel.
- Tighten the clamping nut.
- Put connector on the other end of feeder hose; connect this to the tap connector.
- [Note: the feeder hose makes use of couplings, so attach it in the same way as the garden hose.]
The garden hose
- Straighten out the hose to remove any kinks and bends.
- On the female end of the garden hose, insert the washer.
- If the reel has a guide opening, put the female end of the hose through it.
- Thread the end of the hose with the female connection onto the water coupling on the inner spindle/drum of the hose reel.
- Tighten it firmly.
- Begin to wind the drum/spindle using the handle, feeding it back and forth unless your hose reel does it for you.
Can hoses be left outside during the winter?
Hoses left outside in freezing conditions may be damaged through cracking. Water left inside the hose will freeze and expand, putting pressure on the hose from the inside. Cold temperatures also harm the rubber that the hose may be made of. To preserve the working life of your hose, drain the water from it roll it up on a hose reel and move it inside your shed or garage.
Do you have to shut off the water to the hose in winter?
Yes. It’s also best to disconnect the hose from the outside tap and drain all the water from the hose. Water left inside the hose will freeze and expand. This puts pressure on the hose from the inside and may crack it in one or more places. It’s best to avoid all this potential damage by winding up your cleaned and emptied hose and storing it somewhere protected, preferably inside.
Final Conclusion
With all the time and effort you spend keeping your garden well maintained and looking beautiful, it’s always a hassle to put your tools away at the end of another Sunday of garden chores. A hose reel cart helps you out in three ways: it makes it simple for you to water all parts of your garden, easily moving the hose between all your outdoor taps; it also, with little effort on your part, rewinds the hose in an orderly manner; and finally, it enables you to move the hose and the cart to store it in a place that doesn’t spoil the view of your abundant garden.
If you want a top-of-the-line hose reel cart consider our Best Pick, the Hozelock Wheeled Fast Cart with 40m hose.
