I’ve been using the best pruning saws for at least 20 years. From using them to maintain trees when I had a gardening and tree maintenance business to maintaining trees around my family’s nursery and, more recently, to help keep the brook clear of fallen trees in my mum and dad’s small wood that covers the back of their property.

Fallen trees in the past have caused the stream behind my mum and dad’s smallholding to back up and flood the paddock. I have also used the Bahco Laplander pruning saw when kayaking in my inflatable kayak to help clear the way whilst on the water should I come across fallen trees or branches that can block the way.

Over the years, I have used several big branded models, but my favourite has to be my Wilkinson sword pruning saw which I first got around 2012 I think. I have recently replaced it with the same model because I personally think it’s one of the best options and it’s not what I call silly money. I want to quickly mention cordless mini chainsaws as I’ve recently reviewed them here. This has proven a good option to use along side a pruning saw.

One of my friends is a tree surgeon by trade and will only buy the Sugowaza Pruning Saw by Silky, he swears by them. However, at over £100, it’s an expensive piece of kit. Him, as someone who uses it every day, he can easily justify the cost. For me, who only uses it a few times a year, it’s simply not worth the cost.

Wilkinson Sword easily cuts through 3-4 inch branches
The Wilkinson Sword easily cuts through 3-4 inch branches

You are probably wondering what size branches I use my Wilkinson sword pruning saw on. Well, I think it’s perfect for branches up to 4-6 inches. It will rip through these branches with no problem. I recently used it to prune out some thick Olearia branches in the garden. It literally took seconds and these were a couple of inches wide. It will cut through much thicker branches with a little more elbow grease, I’d say up to around 8 inches. The blade is around 11 inches long in total, but you need an inch on either side to get the cut going.

Cutting inch and half thick branches with ease with pruning saw

Any thicker than this, and I get my Ryobi brushless cordless chainsaw with a newly sharpened chain out. I have also reviewed this in my cordless chainsaw review. If I’m working at height and don’t feel like using a tripod ladder, then I use my garden multi-tool with the pole pruner attachment for thicker branches. Alternatively, I use my telescopic tree pruner if the branches are only a couple of inches thick but are at height. Now, that’s a great piece of kit. Don’t forget if you have branches that aren’t too thick, a good pair of loppers is all you really need.

What I really like about a pruning saw is they are easy to store, even the models that don’t have a folding blade. You can get them into places to prune branches where you would struggle to get a chainsaw, or even a pair of loppers, in. If I know I’m going to be doing some pruning, I just strap the holster on my belt and I’m good to good. Don’t forget to use a good quality pair of gardening gloves because the blades are incredibly sharp on these saws, and you don’t want your hand to slip and make contact with the blade.

Super grippy rubber handle the Wilkinson Sword has
The Wilkinson Sword has an excellent grip handle

Of course, this is also avoided by choosing a pruning saw with a non-slip grip handle. That’s one of the things I like about the Wilkinson sword pruning saw, it’s got a super grippy rubber handle that is firm and comfortable to use. Basically, I feel safe using it with no worry of my hand slipping. Let me tell you, you wouldn’t want to run your hand over the blade accidentally, it would do some serious damage.

BEST PICK

Wilkinson Sword Pruning Saw and Holster
This pruning saw is probably one of the best pruning saws on the market when you take price into consideration, it even comes with a 10-year guarantee. The blade is manufactured from extremely strong high carbon Japanese steel and the course teeth are triple ground. It makes clean cuts every time and makes like work at sawing through branches. It's also one of the most affordable, making it a great choice for most people which is why I have named it my Best Pick.

Silky Professional SUGOWAZA Saw 420mm XL Teeth, 419-42
Silky Sugowaza Pruning Saw
If you are a professional tree surgeon then I highly recommend this model by Silky. Perhaps one of the most expensive models I have seen but the quality and performance is simply unmatched. Thanks to the Silky Mirai-ME technology it has a longer working life. I don't personally use this but my friend is a professional tree surgeon and swears by it. I personally wouldn't get my money worth out of it but if your a professional or feel like buying the best and don't mind spending money, this is well worth considering.

The Top 8 Best Pruning Saws Review

1. Wilkinson Sword Pruning Saw and Holster

MY BEST PICK

Buy on Amazon

When it comes to pruning saws, you can pay as little as a tenner, to well over a hundred pounds for something like this Silky Sugowaza Pruning Saw. I’ve tried saws that cost a tenner and they leave you thinking you should have just spent a little extra.

Now, what I can tell you is that there is a big difference in quality and performance between most pruning saws that cost £10 and say £20 (Don’t be tempted to buy one just because it’s a tenner, you will be disappointed). However, you may find that there is not that much of a difference between a saw that costs around £20 and say £50, there really isn’t. An example of an excellent high-quality pruning saw that, in my opinion, is probably worth double its current price is this Wilkinson Sword Pruning Saw.

First off, this pruning saw is designed to cut through thick branches effortlessly, and I can confirm it does this really well for branches up to around 6 inches. It is a much easier process for branches that are up to 4 inches. As already mentioned, if you put in a little more effort, it will also easily cut anything up to 8 inches, no problem. Anything thicker than this and my chainsaw is coming out.

The triple ground teeth on the high carbon steel Japanese steel blade
The triple ground teeth on the high carbon steel Japanese steel blade

The stainless steel blade (which is made from high carbon Japanese steel) has triple ground teeth on its 11 inches (255mm) blade that delivers smooth cuts. The advantage of these triple teeth is that the blade cuts both forward and backward. This is important because some pruning saws only cut on the backward stroke so takes longer to cut through any branches. In terms of the overall size, the length is 440mm (17 inches).

I was really pleased with the holster that comes with the pruning saw

I really like the overall quality, and the addition of a holster to hold the pruning saw when not in use is great. I can quickly attach it to my belt or hang it up on a hook or screw in the garage when I am not using it.

cutting through thick branches to clear bruck of fallen tree
Cutting through thicker branches to clear a stream of a fallen tree

Finally, the handle (often overlooked) is just as important as the blade. The handle is angled in a way that’s comfortable to hold and makes those pull and push cuts with minimal effort. The handle is made from ThermoPlastic Rubber, also known as TPR. This, in my opinion, is one of the best materials, if not the best, for handles because it is super grippy on your hand. This will prevent it from slipping, and this is incredibly important when using a pruning saw. Just make sure you also wear a good quality pair of gloves, something I’ll admit I often overlook.

This pruning saw is ultra-sharp and its small size means it can penetrate through those confined spaces where a full-size chainsaw cannot. Finally, it comes with a reassuring 10-year guarantee.

Pros

  • A highly durable tool that comes with a 10-year guarantee.
  • It cuts through thick branches and delivers smooth cuts.
  • It comes with a holster for safe storage.
  • Very comfortable for the hand because of the non-slip grip handle.
  • Small enough to reach into confined spaces.

Cons

  • We didn’t find any flaws with this tool.

Our recommendation

I have been so impressed with this Wilkinson Sword Pruning Saw that I have been using this model for over 10 years now and have only just recently replaced it with a new one because it seems to have disappeared. No doubt borrowed and not returned, however that is another story.

Pruning saw I have used for 10 years and just replaced with a new one
This is the pruning saw I have been using for 10 years and have only just replaced with a new one

I think this is a great pruning saw without the price tag of more expensive alternatives such as the Silky Sugowaza Pruning Saw, which I review next but is five times the price. This pruning sword by Wilkinson Sword is a great model for those looking for a good quality pruning saw but at a more affordable price.

For most people, I can’t recommend this model highly enough. Now, if you want a more compact folding pruning saw, then take a look at this Bahco Laplander Folding Saw instead.

2. Silky Sugowaza Pruning Saw

BEST PROFESSIONAL PICK

Buy on Amazon

Silky Professional SUGOWAZA Saw 420mm XL Teeth, 419-42

The Silky Sugowaza Pruning Saw is a very helpful tool when used along with chainsaw work. Now, this model is a professional tool and expensive. I have a friend who is a professional tree surgeon, and this is what he uses. He says it is worth the extra cost and, although expensive, pays for itself in no time when used professionally. There are very few pruning saws that can compare to the quality and cutting performance of this saw, it is simply in a league of its own.

For me, even though I do make use of a pruning saw fairly regularly, especially in winter, I couldn’t justify the cost when I could get the other models, such as the Wilkinson sword saw, for a fraction of the cost that does just as good a job. This obviously assumes you aren’t using it as a professional tool daily. If you want the best or can make use of it on a professional scale, this is by far the best pruning saw and well worth considering.

It is very sharp and easily cuts down thick branches with its 16.5-inch blade, tapered from the tooth tip to the back spine. This helps to reduce resistance while delivering smooth, easy and fast cutting performance. Now, this thing can definitely cut with minimal effort. The teeth feature Silky’s Mirai-Me design (which couples up with the exceptional Ono Japan NKS85 steel blade) to deliver unparalleled cutting efficiency and performance. I know this comes across like an advert, but I want to make it clear what you are actually paying extra for.

Along the length of the blade are 4 cutting angles that leave a clean, smooth surface when cutting. The saw cuts on the pull stroke for enhanced control and ergonomic benefit. There is a slip guard featuring a chrome finish and is specially made to protect gloves from accidental cuts and nicks by teeth or thorns. The blade can be replaced by removing the screws and slip guard, but I’m not sure how easy it would be to get a replacement blade, so bear this in mind.

A large grooved rubber handle feels comfortable in the hand and it offers maximum grip in wet and cold conditions while reducing vibration. Like every Sugowaza saw, this pruning saw comes complete with a custom scabbard featuring a D-ring along with strap slots to facilitate attachment to the tool board/curtain, belt or leg.

This model is available in 6.5 teeth per inch configuration and weighs only 750g, which I think is quite lightweight for its size. To give you an idea my Wilkinson sword pruning saw weighs only 380g and my Bahco Laplander Folding Saw weighs 200g. To ensure the Silky Sugowaza Pruning Saw lasts a long time, make sure you don’t put it away when wet because it will rust pretty quickly. I always clean my tools with a spray of WD40 after every use, this keeps them in perfect condition and protects them against rust.

Pros

  • The blade has a longer working life boosted by the Silky Mirai-ME technology.
  • It cuts fast and smoothly because of the extremely sharp teeth with 4 cutting angles.
  • It is comfortable to hold even in wet conditions thanks to the rubber handle.
  • Extremely lightweight with only 750g.
  • Safe to work with thanks to the protective slip guard.

Cons

  • It is susceptible to rust if not well maintained.
  • The blade starts to lose its sharpness after some time.

Our recommendation

This Silky Sugowaza Pruning Saw makes pruning an absolute breeze and there are many factors that make it possible. Along with the much better grip is the slip guard above the handle that stops you from smashing your fingers or preventing them from slipping onto the blade. In addition, the Sugowaza is a pretty lightweight model making it ideal to use for extended hours.

Overall, the Silky Sugowaza Pruning Saw is an excellent tool for easily cutting down green hardwood. With a clean, smooth cutting performance, the Sugowaza is on top of its game and possibly the best choice for professionals or those, quite simply, looking for only the best tools.

3. Bahco Laplander Folding Saw (396LAP)

Buy on Amazon

Bahco 396 Lap Laplander Folding Pruning Saw

The Bahco Laplander Folding Saw is a popular tool for a wide range of uses, including pruning, camping and the general sawing up of branches. Personally, I use this for kayaking because it’s compact, folds down small, and is very lightweight. It features Bahco’s unique XT toothing, which has been designed to be fine and extremely sharp and this enables quick and efficient cutting.

I will add it’s easier to get this saw cutting than my best pick because it has more of a finer blade rather than a course blade. With this in mind, it’s probably a better choice than the Wilkinson sword pruning saw for those with weaker hands, as it is easier to get it started. Once cutting though, this is where the Wilkinson sword eats through wood much faster. It will prune trees for many years thanks to its rust protection and low friction.

This folding saw features a 2-component plastic handle with a leather strap which ensures a pretty strong grip. Due to the well-figured-out ergonomics of this saw, it feels comfortable when holding and working with it. Therefore, we find it ideal for tougher jobs.

It comes with a 7 1/2 inch blade that easily cuts through dry wood, plastic, or even bone. Such is the quality that makes it ideal for outdoor enthusiasts, these include hunters, campers, kayaking (for clearing fallen trees), and wildlife enthusiasts. The blade cuts in both directions so both pushing and pulling will see you cut through the material at hand.

Pros

  • The 7 1/2 inch blade makes for fine cuts quickly.
  • It has both front and backstroke and cuts in both ways for increased effectiveness.
  • Comfortable to handle and use due to its ergonomic design.
  • Enhanced performance thanks to the rust-protection features on the blade.
  • Easy to carry around because of the tough folding sheath and safety lock-in and lock-out feature.

Cons

  • It is extremely sharp. You might end up with some nicks on your fingers if you are not careful enough with this.

Our recommendation

This Bahco Laplander Folding Saw is an extremely sharp tool that will cut through almost anything you throw at it, wood, bone, plastic and more. Personally, I’ve only used it on wood. What I did notice is that it had an exceptional build quality including a durable blade, comfortable handle, and corrosion-resistant material, making a tool that will last a long time.

It can also be a great tool for outdoor junkies of all kinds as it is light, compact and safe to carry around. Be careful when using this saw because it is very sharp. Overall, it is a great little saw.

The three pruning saws I have just reviewed are the ones I highly recommend. If I had to recommend just three pruning saws, they would be it. But here are a few more that are worth considering should my top 3 not be available for any reason.

4. Spear & Jackson Razorsharp Small Folding Pruning Saw

Buy on Amazon

Spear & Jackson 4960RSA Razorsharp 7inch Small Folding Pruning Saw

This is a handy saw to cover those tasks that are beyond the large clippers. The Spear & Jackson Razorsharp Small Folding Pruning Saw features a 7inch carbon steel blade which is hollow ground to enhance efficiency and cutting performance. Precision cutting is also a top priority of this tool featuring extremely sharp 7ppi teeth which cut on the backstroke.

The blade can be locked in either an open or closed position and this will help to protect it from slipping onto your fingers, especially when it’s open. The handle has a rubber layer that provides a nice grip and feels comfortable to use. You will be better off wearing gloves if you are going to work for long hours because the rubber may cause blisters on sweaty hands.

On the handle is a perfectly designed storage port where the saw folds back into when not in use. At 118g, the Razorsharp Small Folding Pruning Saw is an ultra-lightweight tool but is also tough enough to take on all sorts of gardening cutting jobs, all day long. It is also small enough to get into those tight corners. From cutting down an old hedge to hacking through bamboo and small tree branches. This tool is a real beast.

Pros

  • It has a strong blade that will last a long time.
  • It cuts precisely because of the 7ppi ultra-sharp teeth.
  • The blade folds back into the storage for user and blade protection.
  • Also, the blade can stay in both locked open and closed positions.
  • It is very lightweight.

Cons

  • Not effective with heavy-duty cutting as the blade is not as strong as advertised.

Our recommendation

The Spear & Jackson Razorsharp Small Folding Pruning Saw is very easy to use thanks to its small size and the fact it is lightweight. It cuts fine and smoothly on most trees but it is really effective for cutting softer branches.

It does offer a firm grip (with or without gloves) and is also well-designed to use and store safely. If you are in pursuit of a well-cared-for garden, this affordable tool from Spear & Jackson might be just what you need.

5. Fiskars Large Xtract Garden Saw

Buy on Amazon

Fiskars Large Handsaw for Fresh Wood, Coarse Serration, Blade Length: 25.5 cm, Retractable, Stainless Steel, Black/Orange, Xtract, SW75, 1000614

Talk of an innovative design and my thoughts go to the Fiskars Large Xtract Garden Saw. It features a 255mm blade that slides out with the help of an easily adjustable nut and retracts into the blade when not in use. It can be operated with or without gloves but the latter use is the safest. The handle fits into the hand really well and it is very comfortable to use, even when working for long hours.

The blade is super sharp with strong long teeth that eat deep into the wood to create a fast cutting action. It is also designed to cut close to the trunk of the trees in order to avoid leaving snugs. The cut is on the return and the rate of cut through green wood is rapid.

There is a loop on the handle that allows the saw to be hung from a belt or anything of that sort. The smaller size also makes it ideal for cutting in confined spaces where other tools such as a bow saw might not fit. The lightweight frame helps to reduce hand and arm fatigue when cutting, especially for overhead branches. It also makes it easy to transport coupled with its retractable design. This tool can also be used as a great camping tool.

Pros

  • It cuts through material quickly because of its large teeth.
  • Easy to carry and transport due to its lightweight and retractable design.
  • The handle is very comfortable in use and less tedious.
  • It cuts through tight spaces because of its small size.

Cons

  • The blade bends if you don’t cut straight down.

Our recommendation

This is a superb saw for larger pruning jobs around the garden. We love the way it fits into the hand and the ease of transporting this tool. The cutting is exceptional because of its strong, long teeth and the locking mechanism is advantageous for safety. It is also ideal for getting into those tight spaces.

One thing, however, is that you have to be careful when dealing with the blade as it bends when not worked correctly. Apart from that, it’s a great piece of kit for anyone with a mature garden and who want to keep it well maintained.

6. Felco 600 Folding Pull-Stroke Pruning Saw

Buy on Amazon

Felco Folding Saw Model 600

Just like all other products from Felco, the Felco 600 folding pull-stroke pruning saw is a well-made kit. It features a pull-stroke cutting action with its rust-resistant chromed blade made of steel for clean, precise cuts. The saw is uniquely designed with taper ground and the teeth are honed to precise knife-edge sharpness. This makes for faster and easier pull action than other ordinary saws. Even more, the teeth can be heat treated to deliver extra clean, precise cuts.

The shape of the blade is thicker at the top and thinner at the bottom and this ensures the teeth stay in good contact with the material that needs to be cut. This design also ensures that there is no clogging or binding because the blade sides never come into contact with the timber.

This saw is maintenance-free and if anything goes wrong the parts can be replaced. With a comfortable non-slip handle, sawing with this tool is a breeze. Furthermore, it is relatively small to reach out to those tight places. As far as it cuts through thick branches, don’t use it regularly to cut branches thicker than 4″ thick as it may lose the tips. This is also a pretty lightweight tool weighing about 200g.

Pros

  • It gives smooth, precise cuts because of the patented turbo-cut saw design.
  • The chrome-plated steel blade is highly durable.
  • All parts can be replaced if necessary.
  • It is easy to use thanks to the comfortable non-slip handle and its light weight.
  • It is lightweight and small enough to cut through confined spaces.
  • The set and shape of the teeth prevent sap build up.

Cons

  • It is quite flimsy and doesn’t stay firmly in the closed position.

Our recommendation

The Felco 600 folding pull-stroke pruning saw is a good sizeable tool and light enough to carry at all times. A non-slip handle ensures it is comfortable in your hand, even if it gets wet, and the turbo-cut saw cuts exceptionally well. It is one of the most durable saws available as it has chrome plating that makes it rust-resistant. The shape of it also ensures no clogging or sap build up. The fact that all the parts can be replaced also makes it a standout product.

Unfortunately, the Felco 600 is a bit flimsy, not what you would usually expect for a tool from a reputable manufacturer. It does bend if handled badly and in the worst case scenario, you might get a severe cut. In any case, it is a good saw for cutting branches with mid-range thickness and it’s fairly affordable.

7. Bosch Keo Cordless Garden Saw

RUNNER UP

Buy on Amazon

Bosch Cordless Garden Saw Keo (with Integrated 10.8 V Lithium-Ion Battery, in Carton Packaging)

This is a compact and lightweight garden saw from a manufacturer with a reputation for manufacturing highly durable garden tools. The Bosch Keo Cordless Garden Saw is battery-powered by a 10.8 Li-ion battery. It is designed to fill the gap between chainsaws and secateurs, where the obvious alternative for cutting mid-range branches would be a handheld pruning saw.

It features a detachable A-grip hook that provides improved performance, even on unsupported branches. The hook eliminates the need for your other hand to support the branch whilst cutting so you can work single handedly. Its lightweight frame is also vital for such an operation. Without the hook, the tool is only 900g and it weighs 1.1kg with the hook.

It features the patented Bosch SDS system which makes blade changing easy and without any tools. Clean cutting is possible with the Swiss precision blades fitted in the Bosch KEO. With the A-grip hook attached, it achieves a cutting diameter of 60mm while it reaches 80mm without it. Using any of the blades from the Bosch “All-Purpose” saw range, you can make a wealth of cutting applications around the house and garden.

The KEO Cordless Garden Saw has an ergonomic design with a soft-grip handle and is perfectly balanced making it comfortable to use. The battery charges within 3 hours using a hi-fi type charger. It also experiences no self-discharge so the tool retains power while stored in cool, dry places. This cordless freedom enables maximum movement without the worry of cutting through cables. There is a safety lock that prevents any accidental activation of the tool. Also worth mentioning is that Bosch gives a 2-year guarantee on this tool, parts and labour.

Pros

  • Powered by a powerful, fast-charging lithium-ion battery that is compact and lighter than conventional batteries.
  • It comes with a 2-year guarantee that covers parts and labour.
  • It is supplied with accessories for flexible application.
  • Ergonomically designed and lightweight for comfortable handling for extended working hours.
  • Cordless operation means you can prune everywhere in your garden.
  • It makes clean cuts thanks to the Swiss precision blades.
  • The safety lock feature prevents an accidental start.

Cons

  • The battery charge doesn’t last long so you will have to recharge it too often for prolonged use.
  • Some people find it hard to handle.

Our recommendation

When it comes to battery-powered cordless pruning saws, the Bosch Keo Cordless Garden Saw is one of the best tools in that category. Working cordless allows you to reach into tight areas and cut branches. The soft grip and ergonomic shape even make it maneuverable. Blade changing is easy and there is a safety feature that prevents accidental activation.

The major drawback of this tool is the battery. Yes, it is fast charging but on the other hand, it does not hold the charge long enough. Unless you don’t mind frequent recharging, it might not be the perfect fit for you. We have mixed feelings about its ergonomic design because we found that some users find it difficult to use.

Overall, this is a well-made pruning tool that cuts through those thick and awkward branches with ease. For its quality and convenience, this tool is quite expensive. It gets the job done anyway.

8. Black + Decker RS890K-GB Scorpion Powered Hand Saw

BEST VALUE PICK

Buy on Amazon

BLACK+DECKER Powered Hand Saw Jigsaw Autoselect Scorpion 23mm Stroke Length and Prune 500W with Kitbox Includes 3 Blades RS890K-GB

This is an incredibly versatile handsaw, combining a saw, jigsaw and prune in one unit. It cuts through a wide range of materials including wood, metal and plastic as well as being ideal for pruning branches. The BLACK + DECKER RS890K-GB Scorpion-Powered Hand Saw is quite an advanced saw featuring Autoselect technology that enables you to choose the ideal setting for the application. It delivers 0 -2700 strokes per minute with a stroke length of 23cm and this results in easy cuts through various materials.

Talking of the various functions, the first is the sawing mode that enables you to cut rough timber. The second is the pruning mode for pruning trees and large shrubs. Then there is jigsaw mode that allows you to do detail cutting. You can also cut pipes and conduits with the sawing function.

To easily swap between the different applications, the tool features a tool-free push-button for blade changing and it is time and energy saving. The unit has a 3m long cable which we don’t find ideal for most outdoor pruning jobs, but it’s great for indoor work.

It has an extensive soft grip for your comfort, especially during prolonged use. Featuring a patented steady shoe that easily flips out, the tool can be rested against a branch when working and thus makes it easier to cut through branches. The shoe can also be rested on the material which provides stability during application but this applies only when used in jigsaw mode. The tool is supplied with a kit box for carrying the tool and it comes with a 2-year guarantee.

Pros

  • Highly versatile handsaw that comes with three blades for undertaking various tasks.
  • It cuts super-fast with its ability to make up to 2700 strokes per minute.
  • Autoselect technology enables you to select the right settings for different applications.
  • Easy to change the blades with an easy dial-up system.
  • It is quite stable because of the large shoe surface area.
  • It is easy to transport thanks to the supplied kit box.

Cons

  • It is quite heavy and difficult to manage because of its shape.
  • Accuracy is not great particularly in jigsaw mode.
  • The cable is relatively short, could do with a few more metres long.

Our recommendation

This is a good multi-tool handsaw that combines a saw, jigsaw and pruner. Versatility, of course, is its biggest advantage and it’s even enhanced with the Autoselect technology that allows you to choose the right setting for a specific application. There are three blades in this tool and it’s easy to interchange them with a simple push of a button. Stability is also high due to the large shoe surface.

On the downside, this thing is incredibly heavy for pruning jobs. It’s hard to imagine how long you can cut overhead branches carrying a 3.7kg tool, you definitely must work with a ladder. Even so, the cable is still short for reaching those high branches.

Therefore, we find it ideal for pruning low-level plants along the fence or paths. If you are looking for a tool that you can use for pruning and other gardening jobs, the BLACK+DECKER RS890K-GB Scorpion-Powered Hand Saw is an excellent pick. And, if you are an aspiring carpenter and can beat the price.

Pruning Saw Buyer’s Guide

Here are the things you should look at when buying a pruning saw:

Intended use

what to use a pruning saw for

Saws come in different designs and they can serve various purposes. Some saws are just for pruning while others can be used for camping, bushcraft and survival, amongst other uses. So ensure the saw suits your intended purpose. A rule of thumb, especially for a pruning saw, is that it should be able to cut branches of up to 5 inches in thickness. And if the branch is thicker than 10 inches, then a bow saw or even better, a long-reach chainsaw would be the best choice.

Comfort and ease of use

If you can’t prune with ease, then it’s better not to go to work. Looking for a saw with a superior design and an easy grip handle is essential for both performance but also comfort and safety. Also, keep in mind the size of the saw and the size of your hand plus the comfort of the tool with gloves on. Ergonomically designed handles are the best.

Type of blade and build material

Types of blades on saws

Blades come in both straight and curved designs, personally, I prefer straight blades. The straight blades are especially good for cutting thicker branches whilst the curved blades are better for smaller branches. When it comes to material, steel and carbon or chrome-plated dominate the market but you will also find blades made of alloy. Alloy tends to be sharper and they have superior high tensile strengths. I’m a fan of blades made from carbon steel.

Teeth configuration

An important factor to consider is the number of teeth per inch (TPI). A high TPI means that you will get a smoother cut and often easier to start the cut. Keep in mind the size of teeth too. Larger teeth cut deeper and faster than small teeth but can take more effort to actually saw. This means that often, saws with smaller teeth are better for people with weaker hands. Be sure that the teeth will give a reliable performance.

Are you right or left-handed?

Some pruning saw manufacturers fail to consider left-handedness. For instance, by integrating an operable lock, the saw becomes impractical for a left-handed user. So if you are left-handed, then you will have to factor in a saw without an operable lock.

Portability and compactness

Pruning saws are very portable because they are compact and lightweight

Consider the folding mechanism, especially for folding saws, it should be easy to open and fold notwithstanding the intended use.

Safety

Pruning saws have extremely sharp tools and if they are not handled correctly, they may cause accidental severe cuts. Therefore, the presence of lock-in or lock-out mechanisms is a great safety feature to prevent the unintentional sliding of the blade on holding models. A sheath is also handy for storing the blade when not in use. I always recommend wearing a pair of leather gloves.

Price

Usually, there is a huge temptation to purchase the cheapest tool on the market or even the most expensive for that matter. Many of the cheaper saws are less durable. Look for a high-quality saw even if it’s expensive because, in the long run, it’s the long-term value that matters. I found that you can get a decent pruning saw for around £20, any cheaper you could feel it in the quality and performance. Surprisingly, some of the models between £20 and £50 were difficult to tell why one for £30 more as the quality and performance was almost identical. In other words, it was difficult to tell which one was for £20 and which one was £50.

Final conclusion

It is evident that there are many pruning saws on the market, literally, there are hundreds on Amazon alone. In reality, it is even hard to conclusively say that “this” is the best ever product. Here is a little secret, the best pruning saw is the one that suits every aspect of your needs the best.

Do you want to cut thick overhead branches or low-level, long overgrown branches? If it can do the job at hand with ease, it’s comfortable to use, and the price is just right, then you can say that you have the best tool.

I hope you have learned a lot from my top models. It is hard to rate them, but here is my top recommended pruning saw.
